Merger and acquisition deals continued despite the market volatility, taking the amounts of year-to-date transactions to more than $3trn, a record year for corporate activity: Cheung Kong Infrastructure bid $12.2bn for Power Assets; Australia’s Woodside Petroleum offered $8bn for smaller rival Oil Search; Mitsui Sumitomo bid $5.3bn for UK-listed insurer Amlin; Blackstone bought Strategic Hotels in the US for $6bn.
